VDOT is seeking an experienced Network Engineer 4 to support operations at its Staunton, VA office. This role requires a seasoned professional with strong problem-solving skills, a high degree of independence, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. The Network Engineer will support the Transportation Operations Center, providing end-to-end support, network design, implementation, and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Respond to Tier 1–3 network support requests and incidents.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues and break/fix requests.
- Design, configure, and deploy network infrastructure and hardware.
- Monitor network resources for performance, availability, and security threats.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation on network architecture and projects.
- Ensure accurate inventory and maintenance of network assets.
- Manage VLANs, routing protocols, access control lists, and remote access technologies.
- Collaborate with ITS Field Maintenance for communications and support.
- Support network security initiatives, including threat hunting and mitigation.
- Implement and maintain cybersecurity best practices and protocols.
- Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Extensive experience with Cisco Routing and Switching
- VLAN Management and Network Design expertise
- Proficient in configuring Access Control Lists and subnetting
- Experience with authentication protocols (e.g., RADIUS, TACACS+)
- Strong knowledge of routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF
- Hands-on experience with Cisco FMC/Firepower
- Network Monitoring and performance tuning skills
- Familiarity with Wireless Technologies
- DNS and DHCP configuration and troubleshooting
- Understanding of STP, VTP, Multicast protocols
- VPN and Remote Access Technologies
- Strong background in Network Security
Preferred Qualifications:
- Industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent)
- Prior experience supporting transportation or government networks
- Experience with cybersecurity threat analysis tools
